Awakening is alota lot like puberty: vampires have to go through it at some point, and it makes changes in you, some you like, and some you don't.
Some vampires wake up one morning totoallytotally different, and for some it takes a lot longer; sometimes they don't even realize exactly what they are untilluntil they stumble over something like this, you know, something that lets them know they aren't alone or just going crazy...
The biggest change is that vampires who are awakened must feed, so we have an extra hunger,thirst, a need for the energy that we can only get from other people.
Also, many vampires learn how to sense and manipulate their own energy, which is the way psychic vampires feed, and in general our senses become better, especially vision, which makes us sensitive to light.
There are rumors of vampires being 'turned' instead of awakening on their own, but even the rumors are uncommon, so asking vampires to turn you is silly...
